Nueva York: Glimpses

I took many pictures of New York while we were there, and wanted to share a few of my favorite glimpses:

Sometimes it's the smallest details that I remember best, which is kind of silly because I don't remember the entire context. What about you? Are you a detail rememberer or a big picture rememberer?

Nueva York: Essential Sights

Wherever we travel, Kirk and I compile a list of must-see places. Usually these consist of national monuments and tourist traps because how could we make it so far only to be prideful about our traveling habits? Being smug is no reason to not experience something, I believe. While we are super good at adapting to new places (we gave accurate directions on four different occasions on our short trip!) we also like to be a little silly and embrace our inner tourists. So, in New York, we went all over the place and saw lots of awesome things and even took a bus tour (which made me feel super dorky, but I powered through my pride):

Freedom Tower under construction

World Trade Center Memorial

Survivor Tree

Metropolitan Museum of Art

Hellenistic Gallery at the Met

Top of the Rock Observation Deck

Top of the Top of the Rock

Brooklyn Bridge

Manhattan

Lady Liberty

Hudson River

Ellis Island

Central Park

What about you? Do you swallow your pride and embrace being a tourist or do you try and blend into your surroundings?

Nueva York: Architecture

Oh my word, guys: I never thought I'd say this in my lifetime, but I just got back from New York City! I think I could live there if I had a somewhat spacious apartment near Central Park and I knew I wouldn't be stuck there the rest of my life.

There are so many things to be discovered in New York. First of all, architecture is real! I know, it's hard to believe when you don't actually see cool buildings on a daily basis. Or maybe you do, and you take it for granted. Here are some fun bits that I was lucky enough to experience first hand:

Stay tuned for more adventures from the Big Apple!

Strutting to the Symphony

Kirk and I got our fancy on to go to the symphony a while ago. I was mostly looking for an excuse to wear my long black gloves in public, but then I chickened out and just carried them around instead of wearing them. It seemed more aristocratic to me.

The baby didn't attend with us, fret not. You just can't see my awesome gloves in the first picture.

Kirk and I loved the music that was playing: Mozart's last requiem that includes "Lacrimosa." Mmm! I could just swim in that melody for a whole week and never tire of it. We got to enjoy some beautiful singers too, but they're the kind you can enjoy better with your eyes closed, if you know what I mean.

Something that made us feel even fancier that night was going out to eat at Carrabba's, which is our favorite restaurant. We can't go there very often due to budgetary reasons, but it makes the times we do go that much more enjoyable. Well, we showed up to the restaurant with plenty of time to eat and hit the road to make it to the symphony on time (no late-comers allowed!), or so we thought...until it dawned on us that it was a prom night. Dang those kids! We ended up having to get our main courses to go and the restaurant manager gave us free dessert because I think he felt bad. Either that, or he was scared we wouldn't give our waiter a tip. We didn't even make a stink about things, so that was a score for politeness! Kirk and I have debated since then about intentionally making a stink about things if it means getting free dessert.

The good news is that we made it to the performance on time, albeit barely, and the food was scrumptious and the music divine. It's something fun to do at least once, don't you think?

Family Pics

When my friend, Lynley, came over to take pictures for our little monkey's birthday bash, we had her take some family pictures too. Here are just a few of my favorites:

I totally love them! Didn't Lynley do a great job?
