Fancy Schmancy

This fancy little jar with a lid is one of my favorite ceramic pieces that I've created. I mixed my own crackle glaze and highlighted certain portions with it.

The most time-consuming part was attaching all of the mini handles along the top of the jar, but I think it was totally worth it. Is there anything that you've spent painstaking hours on but was worth the extra time in the end?

More Pot, Anyone?

Points of interest:

• I used the same blue glaze on this pot as the last one I shared. I love, love, love the blue and rust color contrast. So tasty!
• As the wet pot was turning, I made quick diagonal slashes along the side for a texture detail. It's interesting how such a small detail can make the biggest difference.
• In order to give the piece enough lift to make it more visually interesting, I added these small feet to create a sharper shadow at the bottom. It's so much more aesthically pleasing to have a piece that feels like it's holding up its own weight than a piece that feels heavy and looks like it's sinking into the tabletop.

It's Been a While

It's about time to share another piece of handmade pottery:

I love the way this blue glaze turns all rusty-colored where it's thinner. Features to point out about this little pot are the thumb-print handles and slashed side for added texture.

From the Potter's Wheel

This is one of the first successful pieces of pottery I ever made. I love the way this handle feels around my fingers.

It makes me smile every time I pull my own art from the kitchen cupboard because it isn't just pretty to look at, it's useful as well.
